This glossary of Air freight Terms, displayed in alphabetical order, gives the terms used in shipping and cargo operations

Airline annotated rate | Rate for a City-pair to be used for rate/ charge calculation when transporting goods with the indicated airline. |
Air Operator | Company operating aircraft |
Airport-to-airport (A2A) | Transport from an airport of origin to an airport of destination |
Air Waybill (AWB) | Means the document made out on by or on behalf on the shipper which evidences the contract between the shipper and carrier(s) for carriage of the goods over routes of the carrier(s) (see also page: Air Waybill) |
Air waybill, Neutral | A standard AWB without identification of issuing carrier in any form. |
Alliance Carriers | Carriers that have a special alliance with each other to transport the cargo over the route. |
Alliance Countries | Countries that have a special alliance about the import and export of the cargo by a carrier. |
Allotment | Assigned volume on board of a flight / day |
Ancillary equipment | Equipment use to build up pallatized load or to convey a unit load device outside any draft |
Arbitrary | A term equivalent to proportional, add-on or construction rate. |
Assembly Cargo | see Cargo assembly |
Authorization | The commission to a certain person or body to act on behalf of another person or body ; the person or body can be authorized e.g. to issue air waybills or to collect freight |

Baggage | Baggage carried as cargo. |
Base Rate | A tariff term referring to the a rate less accessorial charges, or simply the base tariff rate. |
Belly | Lower-deck cargo hold of an aircraft. |
Bids | Rate offers from carriers to forwarders. |
Billing participant | An IATA member or any other entity, being neither a CASS airline nor a Part-Participant, which submits to the Settlement Office AWB data in a an electronically readable form in respect of the transactions made on it's behalf of the agents. |
Blocked-space agreement (BSA | A continuous reservation (allotment) for space at one or more flight / date combinations with an airline |
Bonded Goods | Goods on which the customs duty has not yet been paid, and which therefore, are under the control of customs; usually in a Bonded warehouse. |
Bonded warehouse | A depository for goods on which the customs duty has not been paid ; the warehouse proprietor must provide a bond (often in the form of a bank warranty or a mortgage) to the customs authorities as a security for any duties which may not be paid by the customer. |
Booking | Request for reservation of space on a flight/day, (to be) confirmed by the airline. |
Break bulk | Disassembling of consolidated shipments for delivery or re consignment of a shipment. |
Break bulk agent | An agent who breaks consolidated consignments into their individual parts. |
Breakdown List | List of shipments carried in one consolidation (see also: Consolidation Manifest). |
Break-even weight | The weight at which it is cheaper to charge the lower rate for the next higher weight break multiplied by the minimum weight indicated , than to charge the higher rate for the actual weight of the shipment. |
Broker | Person who acts as an agent or intermediary in negotiating contracts ; sometimes refers to a forwarder role. |
Bulk Cargo | Loose cargo not loaded on an ULD. |
Bulk Unitization Charges | A charge for re-contouring and/or adjusting at the time of delivery or unloading on destination by an airline. |

Cargo Assembly | The separate reception of parcels or packages and the holding of them for later dispatch as one consignment. |
Cargo Charges Correction Advice (CCA) | A document used for the notification of changes to charge and/or method of payment inserted on an AWB |
Cargo Community System (CCS) | An information system integrating the communication between air cargo parties at an airport. |
Cargo, Disassembly | The separation of one or more of the component parts of a consignment for any purpose other then that of presenting such part or parts to customs authorities at the specific request. |

Cargo, IMP | ATA/IATA Cargo Interchange Message Procedure developed by the Member Airlines of the Air Transport Association of America and the Internationale Air Transport Association. |
Cargo IQ | Cargo IQ is an IATA interest group with the mission of creating and implementing quality standards for the worldwide air cargo industry. (See also page: Cargo IQ) |
Cargo, Transfer | Cargo arriving at a point of one flight and continuing therefrom by another flight by the same or a connected carrier. |
Cargo, Transit | Cargo arriving at a point and departing therefrom bye the same through flight. |
Carriage | (Also know as transportation), this means the carriage of cargo by air, whether gratuitously or for reward. |
Carriage Details | The shipping details of one of the transport modal. |
Carriage, Domestic | Carriage in which according to the contract of carriage, the place of departure and the place of destination are situated in within one country. |
Carriage, Interline | See Interline Carriage |
Carriage, International | (Except for the purpose of the Warsaw Convention). Carriage in which, according to the contract of carriage, the place of departure and any place of landing are situated in more than one State. in this definition the term "STATE" includes the territory subject to the sovereignty, suzerainty, mandate authority, or trusteeship thereof. |
Carrier | Includes the air carrier issuing the AWB and all other carriers that carry or undertake to carry the cargo under the AWB or to perform any other services related to such air carriage. |

Cartage | The charge paid for picking up or delivery goods by surface transportation. |
Cash On Delivery (COD) | This means that a carrier should be collected payment from the consignee and remit the amount to the shipper. |
Cargo Accounts Settlement System (CASS) | A system of accounting and setting accounts between CASS airlines on the one hand and their appointment IATA Cargo Agents on the other hand. |
CASS Airline | An airline participating in the CASS |
Certificate of Origin | A document issued to certify the origin of goods. |
Charge | An amount to be paid for carriage of goods based on applicable rate for such carriage, or an amount to be paid for a special or incidental service in connection with the carriage of goods. |
Chargeable Weight | The chargeable weight is the actual gross weight or volume weight, whichever is higher, provided that where a lower charge or higher minimum weight applies, the latter shall be retained as chargeable weight. |
Charge Collect | The charges entered on the AWB for collection from the consignee. |

Charges, Forwarding | Charges paid or to be paid for preliminary surface or air transportation to the airport of departure by a surface or a air transportation agency, not a carrier under the AWB. |

Charges, Prepaid | The charges entered on the AWB for payment by the shipper. |

Charter Contract | A special agreement whereby carrier, for an agreed operation, places at a shipper's disposition the entire capacity of an aircraft. |
Charterer | The person who has signed a charger contract with the carrier. |
City-Pair | An origin city and a destination city used in a rate publication |
City Terminal Service | The surface carriage of consignments between carrier's city handling station and the airport of departure or destination, as the case may be. |
Claim | A written complaint about the execution of a contract of transportation by a carrier, combined with a demand for financial compensation. |
Class Rate | A rate applicable to a specifically designated class of goods. |
Classifying | Assigning the right import classification number to goods as part of the customs declaration process. |
Combi | Combi Aircraft, combining transport of passengers and cargo on the main-deck. |
Combination | The establishment of a rate or charge by addition of sectional rates or charges. |
Commodity Rate | See Specific Commodity Rate |
Commodity | Indication of the type of goods ; commodities are coded according to the harmonised system. |
Commodity code | Code used in the Harmonised System for the classification of goods, which are most commonly produced and traded. |
Complaint | An official statement from a customer to a carrier about his unhappiness with the service or operation of the service provider. |
Conditions | The conditions will show which charges and surcharges are included, and which are excluded from the rate. |
Conditions of Carriage | The terms and conditions established by a carrier in respect to its carriage. |
Conditions of Contract | The terms and conditions shown on AWB. |
Connecting Carrier | A carrier whose services the cargo is to be transferred for onward connecting transportation. |
Consignee | The person whose name appears on the AWB as the party to whom the goods are be delivered by the carrier. |
Consignment | (Also known as shipment) means one or more pieces of goods accepted by the carrier from one shipper at one time and at one address, receipted for in one lot and move on one AWB to one consignee at one destination address. |
Consignment, Consolidated | A consignment of multiple packages with had been originated by more than one person each of whom has made a agreement for carriage by air with another person other than a scheduled air carrier. Conditions pertaining thereto, applied to that agreement, may or may not be the same as the conditions pertaining thereto , applied by the scheduled air carrier for the same carriage. |
Consignment, Mixed | A consignment of different commodities, articles or goods, whether packed or tied together or contained in separated packages and for a which different rating applies. |

Consolidation Manifest | List of shipments carried in one consolidation. |
Consolidation Rates | Rates as given by a consolidator / forwarder. |
Consolidator | A person or organization performing the consolidation. |

Construction | The establishment of a cargo rate through the use of construction rates. |
Construction Rate | A non-saleable add-on amount for a tariff publication purposes, to be used only in combination with other rates for carriage from, to or through a specific point. |

Courier | Company that carries envelopes and parcels up to from door to door ; air transport is generally outsourced to airlines. |
Courier Rates | Rates as given by a courier. |
Customs Broker | An agent specialize in inbound customs clearance. |
Customs Clearance Agent | Means a Custom Broker or other agent of the consignee designated to perform customs clearance services for the consignee. |
Customs invoice | (Pro forma) Invoice for import declaration (customs and statistics) purposes, stating the commercial price, added with the costs for freight, insurance and packing etc., terms of delivery and payment. |
Customs value | Value of goods to be imported for import declaration (customs and statistics) purposes. |

Dangerous Goods | Dangerous goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment and which are shown in the list of IATA dangerous goods Regulations or which are classified according to the IATA Dangerous goods Regulations. |

Declared value for carriage | The value of goods declared to the carrier by the shipper for the purpose of determining charges or of establishing the ling of the carrier's liability for loss, damage or delay. It is also the basis for the possible applicable valuation charges |
Delivering Carrier | The carrier who delivers the consignment to the consignee or his agent. |
Delivery Order | The authorization to the entitled party for delivery the shipment to party other than the consignee shown in the AWB. |
Delivery Service | The carriage of inbound consignments from the airport of destination to the address of the consignee or that of his designated agent or to the custody of the appropriate government agency when required. |
Demurrage | A variable fee charged to carriers and/or customers for the use carrier owned ULD's beyond the free time allotment. |
Destination | The ultimate stopping place according to the Contract of Carriage. |
Dimensional Weight (Conversion) | Concept adopted by the transportation industry worldwide as a uniform means of establishing a minimum charge for the cubic space a package occupies ; the volume is converted into a (higher) weight / price class. |
Diplomatic Bag | A sealed envelope or bag moving between a government and its accredited representative abroad, supported by a 'Bordereau' which has been officially endorsed to indicate that the envelope or bag contains only official correspondence, for which special security measures are required. |

Disbursements | A charge paid by a carrier to an agent or to another carrier, which the delivering carrier then collects from the consignee. Such charges are usually for agents forwarding fees and incidental expenses paid by an agent or another carrier for the account of shipment |
Domestic Rate | Rate applicable within a country, and in most cases subject to special conditions other then those of IATA. |
Domestic transport | Transport within a country. |
Dolly | A piece of equipment used to move containers or pallets around the airport with the aid of a tractor. |
Door-to-door | Transport from an initial shipper’s house address to a final consignee’s house address. |
Duty | Tax imposed on goods imported from another country. |

Forwarder | Company specialized in providing door-to-airport transport, arranging connecting air transport and/or airport-to-door transport for parcels and consolidations > or up to anything that fits in an aircraft ; the air transport is generally outsourced to airlines and sometimes aircraft operators or air charter companies |
Forwarder network | A network existing of different smaller to medium sized forwarding companies all over the world working together |
Freighter | Aircraft built with the purpose of carrying nothing else than cargo |

French Gold Francs | Francs consisting of 65 U21/ D32 milligrams of gold with a fineness of nine hundred thousandths. |
Fuel surcharge | Surcharge added to the cargo rate to cover the additional costs of increasing fuel-prices ; these will generally follow a certain index. |
Full charter | Chartering the full available volume of an aircraft or flight/day. |
Full Container Load (FCL) | Container fully loaded, generally with goods belonging to one party. |
Full freighter | Aircraft built with the purpose of carrying nothing else than cargo. |

Government Bill of Lading (GBL) | A document which is presented by a U.S. Government Official with goods whose freight charges will be paid by the U.S. Government at Washington. It serves as a shipper's letter of instruction and moreover, after it had been signed by the consignee, as an invoice to the U.S. Government for the freight charges. |
Gross Weight | The weight of the shipment including all packing, blocking, etc. Also including weight of platforms, special bracing, etc., if required. |

Interim receipt | A receipt given by a carrier pending execution of an AWB. |
Interline agreement | A contract between two or more carriers to expedite exchange of traffic between the parties tot the agreement. |
Interline Carriage | The carriage over the routes of to more Air Carriers. |
Interline Carrier | A carrier with whom Carrier has a interline agreement. |
Intermodal Transport | The movement of cargo in a supply chain by more than one mode of transport ; for example road/air or sea/air transport |
Issuing Carrier | The carrier whose AWB is issued. |

Minimum Charge | The minimum amount which applies for the transportation of the consignment. |
Miscellaneous Charge Order (MCO) | A document issued by carrier or its agent, in conjunction with a Passenger Ticket and Baggage Check and which may be used only for payment of baggage shipped as cargo |
Minimum Rate | Rate to cover the basic costs of carrying a shipment |

Normal General Cargo Rate | The normal general cargo rate is 1 kg. For most countries, the Normal general cargo rate is applicable to the consignments of less than 45 kg. For some countries, however the normal cargo rate will apply to consignments of up to 100 kg. |
North Atlantic rates | Apply between the North Atlantic Area and points in IATA Area 2. |
North/Central Pacific rates | Apply between points in IATA area 1. and all point in IATA area 3, except the the South West Pacific. |
Nose loading | Loading cargo through the cargo door in the nose of an aircraft. |
Notify address | Address of a party other than the consignee to be notified of arrival of the goods. |
Notify party | Party other than the consignee to be notified of arrival of the goods. |

On-line Charge | Equivalent to the term local charge, means a charge which applies for carriage over the lines of a single carrier. |
Operative Period | Means the period of time commencing from the date of agreement between Carrier and a shipper or consolidator. |
Overpack | An enclosure used by a single shipper to contain one or more packages and to form one handling unit for convenience of handling and stowage. Dangerous goods packages contained in overpack must be properly packed, marked, labelled and in proper condition as required by the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations ( A Unit Load Device is not included in this definition). |
Over Pivot Rate | The rate per kg. to be charged for the Over Pivot Weight. |
Over Pivot Weight | The weight in excess of the Pivot Weight. |
Oversized cargo | Cargo that exceeds the dimensions of an ULD |

Packing list | A list for customs declaration and consignment purposes stating number and kinds of packages being shipped, totals of gross, legal, and net weights of the packages, marks and numbers on the packages, contents and part-/serialnumbers |
Pallet | A (standardized) platform on which goods can be stacked for transport or warehouse handling purposes. |
Pallet, aircraft | A (standardized) platform on which goods can be stacked for air transport purposes. |
Pallet net | A net used to secure the cargo on the aircraft pallet. |
Parcel | Package. |
Part charter | Chartering of a part of the available volume on an aircraft or flight/day. |
Part shipment | Part of a shipment that travels on a different flight and/or day than the rest of the shipment due to available capacity with the airline |
Participating carrier | A carrier participating in a tariff and who therefore applies the rates, charges, routings and regulations of the tariff. It also means a carrier over whose air routes one or more sections of carriage under the AWB is undertaken or performed |
Parts | For the purpose of applying specific commodity rate descriptions, these are such subjects which are essential to the normal use main article or are an integral component thereof, provided that this shall not include applies. |
Payload | The (cargo) load that can be carried by an aircraft (to generate revenue) |
Pending | Shipment status indicating it is waiting for the next stage in the process. |
Perishable Cargo | Good which will deteriorate over a given period of time or if exposed to adverse temperature, humidity or other environmental conditions. |
Pick-up service | The carriage of outbound consignments from the point of pick-up to the airport of departure. |
Pivot Rate | The minimum rate based on the pivot weight of the ULD, which is linked to the pivot weight. |
Pivot Weight | Minimum chargeable ULD weight. |
Postal Gold Franc | Same as French Gold Francs |
Pre-alert | Message stating the current and or expected status of the goods. |
Principal | The customer ordering the transport or related services. |
Product | Combination of the commodity class, commodity name and service level. |
Produce of the soil | Cereals, flowers, fruits, grains, herbs, plants, seeds, vegetables. |
Proportional Rate | A rate which is used in combination with other rates to establish a through rate. |
Prorate | (where used as a noun). A portion of joint revenue obtained by proration. |
Proration | Division of joint revenue on an agreed basis between the carriers concerned. |
Proration, Mileage | Proration on the basis of the respective local milleages |
Published Charge | A charge, the amount of which is specially set forth in the carrier's rates tariff. |

Quantity Charge | The Unit rate which is lower than the normal rate and applies to shipments meeting specific weight requirements. |
Quantity discount | A percentage reduction of a rate based on quantity. |
Quote | A quote is a price offer; in the context of the software it’s from the forwarder to the shipper. |

Related Charges | A local currency amount in an IATA resolution which is not a minimum charge, GSR, SCR, ULD charge/rage, add-on; a.e.g. dangerous goods handling fee, charges collect fee, charges for disbursements, charges for preparations of Air Waybill, charges in relation to value |
Rerouting | The route to be followed as altered from that originally specified in the AWB. |
Reservations | Means that Carrier will accept requests from shippers for requested space prior to the scheduled departure of the flight on which such space is requested. Confirmation of the Carrier shall apply only to the shipper's description of the commodities to be shipped and to the weight or volume of the shipment. Carrier will advise the shipper the time and the date of the shipment will be acceptable at its cargo receiving in terminal. |
Road feeder Service (RFS) | Road Feeder Service (RFS), is a trucking service carriers use for offline flights to ship the cargo from the airport of origin to the airport where the flight is departing from. (See also page: Road Feeder Service) |
