A container yard (CY) is a facility that is used for the storage and handling of cargo containers. Container yards are typically located near ports, airports, or other transportation hubs, and are used for the storage of full and empty containers.
Container yards are often part of a larger container terminal or port, where containers are transshipped between different modes of transportation. In these cases, the container yard is the area where containers are stored, while the container terminal or port is the area where containers are transferred between ships, trains, trucks, and other vehicles.
For the purposes of freight forwarding, there is a distinction between a container yard and a container freight station (CFS). A CFS is a specific designated area within a container yard where containers are loaded and unloaded.
In cases where the notation CY/CY is present on a bill of lading, the shipper or consignee is responsible for any movement,
costs, or risks associated with the container before it is delivered to the carrier at the CY or picked up from the CY.
Container yards are an important part of the global logistics chain, as they provide a place for the storage and handling of cargo containers. They are typically operated by specialized companies, and may use advanced technology, such as automated container handling systems, to improve efficiency and safety.
