The skid is considered to be the original pallet, and the terms skid and pallet are often used interchangeably. However, a skid differs from a pallet in that it does not have a bottom deck. This design feature makes the skid a cheaper version of the pallet and easier to move as it has less friction.
Due to the absence of the bottom deck, the weight of the skid rests on its vertical slats or legs instead, which provides the skid with mobility and makes it a good option for moving materials from one place to another. Skids are also commonly used as the foundation for heavy machinery and for non-mobile use.
Another advantage of the skid is that it takes up less space and can be easily stored when nested. Nestable pallets are also technically skids, as they also don't have a bottom deck. Nestable pallets represent a more flexible middle ground between the benefits of a skid and a pallet.
