Both pallets and Unit Load Devices (ULD's) serve the purpose of bundling a large quantity of cargo into a single unit for air transportation. The main difference between them is the way they secure the cargo. While pallets are secured by a net attached to the pallet's rim, ULD's are lightweight structures that encase the cargo and have a base, frame with panels, and a door (fabric or solid). ULD's come in various types with different features such as collapsibility, insulation, ventilation, refrigeration, etc.
Why using Unit Load Device?
- Improves supply chain efficiency by allowing for faster and safer handling and transport of cargo
- Facilitates the consolidation of cargo from multiple shipments into a single ULD for more cost-effective transport
- Provides a secure and organized way to store and transport cargo, reducing the risk of loss or damage
- Enables efficient use of aircraft cargo space, maximizing payload capacity and reducing operational costs.
- Gives better protection against all kinds of weather
Why using Pallet/net?
- They can be used with multiple types of aircraft, including narrow-body and wide-body
- They are easy to handle and move with standard pallet jacks and forklifts
- Cargo can be secured with straps, which eliminates the need for additional packaging material
- They can be used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, and logistics
- Cheaper to use than containers
- Accepts cargo that is difficult to fit into containers (e.g. oversized cargo)
- They are stackable and therefore efficient and easy to store empty and return by plane
