Freight Air Waybill (FWB)

A Freight Waybill (FWB) is an electronic version of the Master Air Waybill (MAWB) that is transmitted from an agent to a carrier. It is used to facilitate the transport of goods by air and contains information about the shipment, including details about the sender, the recipient, and the goods being shipped.

The FWB is transmitted in an electronic format, such as EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), and the details of the FWB and
other EDI communications are defined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and published in the IATA Cargo IMP Manual. The CargoIMP (Cargo Interchange Message Procedures) support all processes in freight handling, including the transfer of air waybill data, flight manifest, shipment status, discrepancies, embargo's, customs information, CASS billing and settlement system, and dangerous goods information.

The FWB is an important document in the process of transporting goods by air, as it provides critical information about the shipment to the carrier and helps to ensure that the goods are handled and transported safely and efficiently. It is important to ensure that the FWB is accurate and complete, as errors or omissions can result in delays or other issues.

The advances that a FWB have:

  • Simplified and efficient Goods Acceptance
  • Better data quality with EDI ensures that all important and relevant data is registered and that all information is available.
  • High-quality FWB data reduces accounting irregularities
  • Sending a FWB is an automatic process – with no additional work pressures
